A lot happened in that final episode of Game of Thrones, but let’s be honest with ourselves for a second — the fate of Westeros doesn’t matter at all if Tormund Giantsbane is dead. He’s the burly ginger that everyone loves, and quite frankly we don’t want to live in a world where he doesn’t get to make large babies with Brienne of Tarth.
Unfortunately, Tormund was Eastwatch by the Sea when the Night King attacked the wall with undead Viserion. A huge section of the wall crumbled to pieces, and we saw multiple scenes with wildlings and Night’s Watch members falling to their death. However, the fate of Tormund (and Beric Dondarrion) was left a bit ambiguous. Did they manage to escape? Or are they buried under a few thousand tons of broken ice?
After multiple rewatches, YouTuber King Mckay seems to have established an answer that makes sense. The key is in two back-to-back shots that show Tormund looking back at the crumbling wall while running West (towards Castle Black), followed by a shot that shows the Night King only knocked down enough of the wall to let his undead army through. Tormund is likely on top of the part that didn’t fall. We hope.
The video may be a good indication, but the actor who plays Tormund is less sure about his fate.
“I honestly don’t know,” Kristofer Hivju told The Hollywood Reporter. “It doesn’t look good, though, does it?”
“I don’t know, I don’t know. Realistically speaking, if you’re on top of an ice wall and it’s many hundreds of meters tall… I was a competitive climber when I was younger, and that fall, I must say, it doesn’t look good, man. It really doesn’t look good.”
