The Walking Dead Showrunner and Cast Reveals Who Will Replace Rick as Leader

Source: AMC

Fans of The Walking Dead have been wondering who’s going to take Rick’s role as leader once Andrew Lincoln leaves the show.

Many have speculated that Rick’s right-hand man Daryl Dixon played by Norman Reedus, the real life best-friend of Andrew Lincoln, might take the reigns from Rick once he makes his departure. However, both the cast of the show and the Showrunner Angela Kang have come forward with a statement addressing these questions.

Angela Kang spoke to Variety about this stating that isn’t not really a straightforward answer, eluding that it’ll be a group-based leadership rather than an individual that will take Rick’s place.

The group’s leadership will be collaborative among Daryl Dixon, Michonne, and Carol, perhaps operating in a manner similar to their behavior as a council back when the group resided in the Prison.

Kang stated…

“Norman sort of has Daryl’s attitude, like ‘I don’t wanna be called number one.’ In his own way, he leads. I think Danai is a wonderful leader as well. She has her own style of things. She very much looks out to make sure things are fair for people. Melissa is a wonderful presence that anchors stuff when she’s there,”

Kang continuing on to say “At this point, I don’t think any one person has to be like, ‘OK, I’m the leader, guys.’ Everybody just knows whenever you’re in a scene and you’re the senior person, you set this example of the professionalism and the respect that has been the vibe of the show since the beginning, which was set by Andy. I think that’s a big part of his legacy to the show.”

Co-stars Danai Gurira (Michonne), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan), Lauren Cohan (Maggie) and Norman Reedus (Daryl) all gave tribute to Lincoln’s fantastic job as the show’s lead over the course of the show’s production.

Gurira when speaking about Lincoln stated..

“Andy is a quintessential leader. I’ve said this many times, and I really couldn’t say it enough, I believe — and I know I’m right — he’s the best leading man on television”

She continued to say.. “there’s something so beautiful about his form of leadership, and it does come from those first moments that you’re on the set and you’re welcomed into the family, and he is right there, present, loving, generous, kind, supportive, so you immediately feel that there’s someone — the leader — wants you to succeed, and is thrilled when you do. And that can only make you better, and it can only teach you how to be better to others as well. I was saying to him – he’s left us with the example of how to carry on, because he gave such a beautiful example himself. I couldn’t say enough amazing things about this man, quite honestly.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan remarked that “(Lincoln) is the leader of this show, and everyone kind of follows his lead, and he also — he leads with his heart. That’s a very rare quality.”

Norman Reedus has also now addressed the ever-present theory that the fan-favourite Daryl will become the leader.
In regards to this he said..

“That’s an internet story that’s not true that somebody made up and they ran with it — some of those people can put something on social media and it turns into media outlet stories, which blows me away, but that’s not a true story, Rick is the quarterback of this football team, he’s always been, he always will be.”

“No one’s going to take over Rick’s place, that’s not happening”

I’m excited to see how the group’s leadership will differ with a collaborative effort between Daryl, Michonne and Carol and Rick’s previous leadership. What’re your thoughts on the changes to The Walking Dead? Let us know in the comments below.
