The elusive Duff Beer; only available in Springfield, the fictional home of the Simpson family. Even neighboring rival city Shelbyville doesn’t have it, instead consuming a (presumably) lesser draft, known as Fudd.
This week, 20th Century Fox announced a change in Duff’s overly stingy distribution model. Actual Duff branded beer will be made available this week. Awesome, right?
Well, hold on to your beer mugs. Fox is introducing the beer at first only in Chile, and have stated that South American and Europe are the most likely future destinations for Homer’s favourite brew. Hopefully that list will expand to North America too. Currently the only place to get it is at Universal Studios parks in Orlando and Los Angeles.
Why did Fox wait 26 years to cash in one of the most obvious licensing deals on the entire show?
Jeffrey Godsick, president of Fox’s consumer products division, explained.
“Once you see enough piracy, you’re faced with two choices. One is deciding to fight it, and the other is deciding to go out [into the market] with it.”
“It’s a premium lager. It’s got a very good balance of flavour and refreshment to it. It’s fairly deep golden in color. It’s got a hint of fruit to it. It’s got a caramel aromatic to it.”
There you have it. So many people were making money by selling cheap beer with Duff labels, especially in Colombia and Mexico, that Fox decided to get into the suds market themselves.
