The trailer for the upcoming DC series Titans caused quite a stir when it was released the other week thanks its dark tone and specifically, a scene featuring a brooding Robin saying “F— Batman” after brutally beating a gang of criminals (which of course quickly became a meme).
During IGN’s recent Comic-Con 2018 live show, DC’s Geoff Johns discussed all things Titans and addressed the controversial Robin scene, giving some context as to why this version of the Boy Wonder is so crass.
“That’s actually part of the story of Titans,” Johns explained. “This is after he’s obviously split from Batman if that wasn’t clear enough.
There’s a story to be told in the series. Dick Grayson is really trying to find a new place in the world — a new spot, a new life, just like all the other Titans are. They’re all lost, and they find one another to form this surrogate family.”
Johns pointed to Marv Wolfman and George Perez’s run on the Teen Titans comics as being the inspiration behind Titans’ tone and plot. “That book was, for its time, very controversial,” Johns explained. “It pushed the envelope really really hard, and we wanted to do a show that did the same thing.”
