George R.R. Martin Just Revealed a Big ‘Game of Thrones’ Surprise in a Subtle Way

If you’ve seen the trailer for Season 7 of Game of Thrones, you probably noticed that Lord Beric Dondarrion will be returning, wielding his famous flaming sword Lightbringer.

Dondarrion is a member of the Brotherhood Without Banners, but hasn’t been seen since Season 3. After a mighty trial by combat with Sandor “The Hound” Clegane, Dondarrion is killed. Thoros of Myr, a red priest, resurrects him using the same magic that Mellisandre would later use to bring back Jon Snow. Then they reminisce about all the other times Dondarrion has died, mentioning that each revival makes him a little less human. This is all important context.

In a recent interview with Time magazine, Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin revealed something interesting about Dondarrion’s return to the show in Season 6.

[P]oor Beric Dondarrion, who was set up as the foreshadowing of all this, every time he’s a little less Beric. His memories are fading, he’s got all these scars, he’s becoming more and more physically hideous, because he’s not a living human being anymore. His heart isn’t beating, his blood isn’t flowing in his veins, he’s a wight, but a wight animated by fire instead of by ice, now we’re getting back to the whole fire and ice thing.

Did you catch that? Martin just confirmed that fire wights exist. FIRE WIGHTS! Throughout the entire book and show sagas, we’ve only ever heard of ice wights, the undead army who does the bidding of the White Walkers. All of a sudden, there are fire wights too! What the hell?

Of course, Dondarrion is the only one we know about so far. Are there others? How are they made? Will the ice wights be their natural enemy? Or will they also seek to destroy humanity? So many questions!

Game of Thrones returns on HBO for Season 7 on July 16.
