George R.R. Martin: “HBO Might Finish Game Of Thrones Before I Do”

Old school Game of Thrones fans – that is, people who have been reading the books since the first one was published in 1996 — have been anxiously awaiting the release of the sixth installment of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy tale. However, Martin recently revealed that the juggernaut HBO television series may beat him to the end.

Two sequels of the story are still awaiting a book release. The upcoming The Winds Of Winter and the final piece, A Dream of Spring, are both still in various states of completion. The problem is that the television show has basically caught up to the books in many of the story arcs, including the controversial death (maybe?) of fan favourite Jon Snow.

At a Q&A event in Spokane, Washington last week, Martin said that it seems more and more likely that the show will finish telling the story before he can. According to GeekWire:

“The show is moving forward like a locomotive, or sometimes a jet locomotive,” Martin said. “They’re writing 60-page scripts, I’m writing 1,500-page novels. So who the hell knows? There was a period where I was worried about that,” he said. “Then I said, ‘to hell with that.’ Worrying about it isn’t going to change it one way or another. I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence … I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.”

Anyone who has read the books will know that the show is slowly differing the original material more and more, both because it makes for a better television show, and in the interest of time. So at least there will still be a reason to read the books when they are finally (if ever) released. There is still no tentative date for Winds of Winter, and Martin wants you stop bugging him about it.

“Don’t ask me when the book is going to be done — I’ll ask my minions to lop your head off,” he said. He was probably joking. Maybe. We think. Yikes.
