It’s no secret that HBO’s Game of Thrones series has caught up to the very series of novels it’s adapting, with this spring’s sixth season poised to surpass where author George R.R. Martin’s story currently is on paper.
Martin has suffered no limit of angry “hurry up” messages from fans to publish his upcoming book The Winds of Winter, which still has no set release date. Martin’s last published entry in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Dance With Dragons, was released four and a half years ago, so many are wondering why Martin is taking so long, especially considering the TV show has already caught up him. According to Martin, it’s not a case of having writer’s block or being lazy; it’s purely due to distraction:
“Writer’s block isn’t to blame here, it’s distraction. In recent years, all of the work I’ve been doing creates problems because it creates distraction. Because the books and the show are so popular I have interviews to do constantly. I have travel plans constantly. It’s like suddenly I get invited to travel to South Africa or Dubai, and who’s passing up a free trip to Dubai?” [via: Indiewire]
Hey, we can get behind that. Who wouldn’t want to experience as many different things as possible when they’re at the height of their popularity? Further complicating matters is the fact that Martin only writes when he’s at home:
“I don’t write when I travel. I don’t write in hotel rooms. I don’t write on airplanes. I really have to be in my own house undisturbed to write. Through most of my life no body did bother me, but now everyone bothers me every day. I have assistants and minions whose main job is to make sure people don’t bother me so I can actually get writing done.”
Considering some of the massive deviations Game of Thrones has taken from Martin’s source material in recent seasons, we find it hard to complain too much about having to wait longer for The Winds of Winter when it will likely be much different from the show’s plot. Martin is still confident that the novel will come out in 2016, so all we can really do at this point is have patience with the man.
