Director Accidentally Confirms(?) Next Season of ‘Game of Thrones’ Will Have Fewer Episodes

It’s not the first time we’ve heard such a rumor pop up but Jack Bender, the man who has already directed two episodes of the current Season Six of Game of Thrones, might have accidently slipped up and revealed HBO’s plans for the future of the show.

While speaking with Vanity Fair, Bender discussed many Game of Thrones related things, including how hard shooting the show can be, what else Bran might have seen in his visions, and what it was like to direct the heartbreaking final moments of Hodor in “The Door.” But when he was asked whether he has any plans to return to the director’s chair for future episodes of the show, he casually mentions much shorter seasons.

I don’t know the answer to that. They’re only doing seven [episodes], and they’ve got their regulars who have done it forever. I know that I had a wonderful experience doing the show and I know that Dan and David are thrilled with the shows, but I’ve got this series I’m mounting for the beginning of 2017 based on Stephen King’s trilogy of books, starting with Mr. Mercedes.

Only seven episodes?!

That’s not good news for Game of Thrones fans, but it’s also not the first time we’ve heard such a rumor. Showrunners David Benoiff and D.B. Weiss previously stated that at the end of the current season, they felt they needed about 13 more episodes to wrap up the story. Although HBO neither confirmed nor denied those plans, it lead many people to speculate that Season 7 would contain just seven episodes, followed by an even shorter Season 8, with just six. Now Bender’s comments seem to confirm something along those lines.

The only upside for diehard fans? That there is only two more years to wait to find out who comes out on top. Personally, we hope it’s the White Walkers.
