Raw had a rough week with a poorly received PPV and a TV show nobody watched, but Smackdown Live is loaded up with a WWE World Title match between AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose! Here are all the results from this week’s episode of Smackdown Live!
Live from Cleveland, Ohio
Randy Orton came out to address his feud with Bray Wyatt. Orton claimed that Wyatt is afraid of him, and wanted the mind games to end, so he called Wyatt out to the ring. Instead, Wyatt appeared live from his smoky room, and talked about Hansel and Gretel, saying he’s left a trail for Orton to follow. Wyatt then showed off an hourglass and sang “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands”. You know, the usual stuff.
– The Usos and The Ascension d. American Alpha, Heath Slater, and Rhyno (Jimmy Uso submitted Slater, Tequila Sunrise)
Searching backstage for Wyatt, Orton deftly avoided a trap that would have sent him straight into the hands of Erick Rowan.
– Carmella and Natalya d. Nikki Bella and Naomi (Carmella pinned Nikki, rollup)
Orton once again proved to be one step ahead when presented with a choice of doors that could potentially lead to Wyatt, avoiding the masked Rowan a second time.
The Miz’s Homecoming Celebration began with a suitably over-the-top fireworks display, followed by a career highlights package starting all the way back with The Real World, going through all his big victories, and concluding with his latest title defense last week. Miz claimed he’s a far better hero to the city of Cleveland than LeBron James, and showed his parents sitting in the front row, as well as Dolph Ziggler’s parents, who Miz proceeded to mock for giving birth to a loser. Ziggler interrupted, and took umbrage with Miz bringing family into things. Miz ran down his accomplishments and told Ziggler he should be embarassed for how poorly his career has gone. Miz refused to grant Ziggler any title matches and began to leave, but an emotional Ziggler talked about how wrestling was all he had, and offered to put his career on the line for one more shot at No Mercy. After ensuring that any possible loopholes were closed, Miz accepted.
– Becky Lynch’s match never began, as Alexa Bliss attacked Becky from behind during her entrance and left her laying.
Curt Hawkins promised “a big Curt Hawkins announcement” next week.
From his secret smoky room, Wyatt claimed victory and demanded to know where Orton was. Orton appeared behind him, and the brawl was on, with Orton getting the upper hand before Wyatt fled. Orton donned a sheep mask and began singing “He’s Got The Whole World In His Hands”.
– AJ Styles d. Dean Ambrose to retain the WWE World Title (pinfall, O’Connor Roll w/tights)
John Cena was on commentary for this match. Near the end, Styles took a cheap shot at Cena, who charged the ring and distracted the referee during a pin attempt, costing Ambrose the match. Ambrose got in Cena’s face after the match, and Cena laid out both Ambrose and Styles and posed with the title.
