WATCH: Ric Flair Congratulates John Cena on Tying His WWE Title Record

John Cena made history at the Royal Rumble on Sunday night in San Antonio. He defeated A.J. Styles to capture the WWE Championship in what was actually a great match, giving him an official championship count of 16 different title reigns. Only one other man in the (admittedly flawed) wrestling history books has as many, the legendary Ric Flair.

According to PWInsider, the WWE had Flair backstage at the Rumble so that he could publicly congratulate Cena for trying his record. At some point, those plans were scrapped in favor of some backstage videos and photo ops. First there was this video, capturing Flair’s initial thoughts on Cena’s historic victory.

Nothing but class from the Nature Boy, who says that if anyone is going to beat his record, he’s thrilled that Cena will (probably) be the man to do so.

Later, Flair tweeted out more congratulations.

Even thought Cena is almost 40 now, and only a part-time WWE performer, it seems obvious that the WWE still wants Cena to be the man to break Flair’s record at some point.
