Rougned Odor and the Texas Rangers made is painfully clear in the past year or so that they don’t appreciate a solid bat flip. After being victimized by Jose Bautistia’s now-iconic Bat Flip™ Moment in the 2015 ALDS, Rangers pitcher Matt Bush plunked the Jays slugger during a regular season game in May 2016. That eventually lead to Odor landing a punch square in the face of Joey Bats, an enduring highlight (or lowlight) of the 2016 season.
Apparently though, Odor isn’t above his own bat flipping moments. During a World Baseball Classic game between Venezuela and Italy, Odor thought he had blasted the go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth inning and dropped his bat like it was a hot mic. Unfortunately as he slowly jogged to first base, the ball hit the top of the wall and dropped back into play. Since Odor didn’t bother to actually run, his mighty bat flipping blast turned into a lowly single. Ooops!
Luckily for Odor, his teammate Yangervis Solarte “plays the game the right way” and actually hustled on the play, scoring the go-ahead run from first. The umpires reviewed the play, just in case the call had actually been hit over the fence and bounced back into the field, but the call stood. Venezuela held on to win 4-3 and eliminate Italy from the tournament.
