On the most recent episode of his Wooooo! Nation podcast, 16-time World Champion Ric Flair gave his thoughts on the angle which closed out Raw this Monday. As part of a contract signing for the Divas Title match at this Sunday’s Survivor Series Pay Per View, Charlotte (daughter of Ric Flair) invoked the memory of her younger brother Reid, who died of a drug overdose in 2013, calling him an inspiration for her own career. Later on in the segment, Charlotte’s opponent on Sunday, Paige, responded to Charlotte by saying “Your little baby brother, he didn’t have much fight in him, did he?”, which provoked a pull-apart brawl as Raw went off the air. Immediate public reaction, including a statement from the mother of Charlotte and Reid Flair, was decidedly negative towards WWE’s decision to run the angle.
Ric Flair claimed that he was not approached or warned about the angle beforehand, and had no knowledge of what WWE had planned. He said that he wouldn’t air his opinion about the angle in public, out of worry that it might affect Charlotte’s career. He did mention that he thought that Charlotte may have agreed to do the angle due to being uncomfortable with disagreeing with management so early in her WWE career, but also said that he was confident that Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and Michael Hayes (one of the heads of WWE Creative) “have her back”. Flair stated that it’s hard to say “no” to any story ideas, due to the pressure-filled environment of WWE.
Flair mentioned that even if he had been told about the angle in advance, it probably would not have mattered in the end, and it would have gone ahead regardless.
Flair went on to say that he would be at Survivor Series this Sunday, and he felt that the entire story would be basically forgotten by then.
