New UFC Champ Tyron Woodley: “GSP Wants To Fight Me”

Could we finally be closing in on the return on the best welterweight to ever step foot into the UFC octagon?

Georges St-Pierre didn’t lose a fight for six years, defending (or unifying) the welterweight championship ten fights in a row, before abruptly leaving the sport in 2013 and vacating the title. Now that belt sits around the waist of Tyron Woodley, who won it by knocking out Robbie Lawler at UFC 201. The new champ wasted little time in calling out the best fighter in the history of the division, in an attempt to goad St-Pierre out of his semi-retirement.

St-Pierre hasn’t said much publicly about a potential return, but according to Woodley’s personal podcast “Morning Wood,” the two fighters have already informally agreed to throw down.

“I’ve already spoken to the lineal champion, the No. 1 welterweight, pound-for-pound one of the greatest in the sport. His interest is fighting me,” Woodley said, according to Jonathan Bradley of FOX Sports. “Georges St-Pierre wants to fight me. And guess what? I want to fight him.”

Woodley’s reference to GSP as the “lineal champion” is interesting, since the St-Pierre never actually lost the welterweight title. Woodley obviously feels like a win against GSP is required to be considered one of the best in the sport.

“There’s honor in it,” Woodley said. “If I’m going to put it on the line, risk it, I want to know that I at least had the opportunity to prove to myself that I am the best welterweight to ever grace the damn Octagon, and if he’s going to give me that chance, I can give a hell less (about what people are saying).”

Of course, championship honor probably isn’t Woodley’s only motivation to challenge the man who was once considered the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet. A return to the UFC for GSP would do massive numbers, both in terms of live gate and pay-per-view buys.
