Nate Diaz Thinks Conor McGregor “Has a Chance” to Beat Floyd Mayweather

With every passing day, the chances of a boxing match between retired champ Floyd Mayweather and UFC golden boy Conor McGregor actually taking place seem to get a tiny bit more likely. A concept that was once dismissed as a pipe dream now seems to have legs, with multiple reports that the the two sides have had serious negotiations and are trying hard to make it happen.

The names involved are more than enough to sell this fight, but almost no one gives McGregor a realistic chance at winning, should the details ever get ironed out. Popular consensus is that Mayweather is too quick and too experienced, and will run circles around McGregor in a boxing ring where kicks or takedowns aren’t allowed. However, there is at least one man who thinks that McGregor has a decent shot at beating Mayweather, and it’s someone who has already been inside the cage with the Irish star twice.

Nate Diaz, who beat McGregor at UFC 196 and then lost a rematch at UFC 202, appeared on CSN Fights this week and talked about the hypothetical superfight.

“I think McGregor, he’s good and he’s got a good chance of making something happen in two or three rounds,” Diaz said, according to the Washington Post. “He’s got an amateur style, where he’s got the good movement and good punches for six, eight minutes. I would say he’s got a puncher’s chance, if anything. Anybody can be good for … six, seven minutes — anybody — and they all have that puncher’s chance. But [Floyd is] ready to go round after round and he’s gonna be a hard person to get a hold of, so it’s gonna be rough one.”

Diaz is regarded as one of the best boxers currently in the UFC, and he’s stood toe-to-toe with McGregor twice now, so his opinion means something. With though McGregor would give up a ton of experience to Mayweather if the fight ever does happen, the UFC champion has legitimate knockout power in his left hand — if it’s fast enough to catch Mayweather, that is.
