A new tradition for the annual WWE Hall of Fame was created last year, in the form of the Warrior Award, given to, in WWE’s own words, “someone who has exhibited unwavering strength and perseverance, and who lives life with the courage and compassion that embodies the indomitable spirit of WWE Hall of Famer The Ultimate Warrior.” The inaugural recipient in 2015 was Connor “The Crusher” Michalek, and just days before WrestleMania, John Cena made an appearance on TODAY to announce the 2016 honoree: journalist and breast cancer survivor Joan Lunden.
Lunden was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in 2014, and became heavily involved in promoting awareness of the disease, including working closely with Susan G. Komen, a charitable organization with close ties to WWE. She will be given the Warrior Award during WWE’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony the night before WrestleMania 32.
