Jimmy Garoppolo Instagram Post Hints at Trade, But Now Says He Was Hacked

Was New England Patriots backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo traded away in the middle of the night? It certainly seemed like that was the case, after an Instagram post on Garoppolo’s account appeared to be saying thank you and goodbye to Boston. Now, mere hours later, Garoppolo remains with the Patriots (for now) and no one seems to know who made the post in the first place, including Garoppolo and his representatives.

Here’s the now-deleted post, featuring Garoppolo and the Lombardi Trophy, which went up sometime around 5:00 a.m. Friday morning:

As everyone scrambled to figure out where Garoppolo was headed, reliable NFL reporter Ian Rapoport quickly put a wet blanket over all the excitement, revealing that the 25-year-old hadn’t been traded (to his knowledge, anyway), and the Instagram post was either a hack or a prank.

Garoppolo is a likely target for team that isn’t completely sure about their quarterback. He performed more than adequately when backing up a suspended Tom Brady in the first four games of the 2016 season and could be ready to take the leap forward into being a full-time starter. He won’t get that opportunity in New England until Brady decides to eventually retire, so he might welcome a move that gives him a chance to play every game.
