Former Newcastle Midfielder Chieck Tiote Dies in China After Collapsing During Training

Chieck Tiote, most notable for playing for Premier League (and sometimes Championship) side Newcastle United from 2010 to 2017, has died after collapsing during a training session in China. Tiote was sold to the Beijing Enterprises of China League One in early 2017.

“It is with deep sadness I confirm that Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training,” said spokesman Emanuele Palladino, according to the BBC. “We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. We ask for all your prayers.”

Tiote was born in the Ivory Coast and began his professional career in Belgium with Anderlecht. A few years later, he was bought up by Eredivisie side FC Twente before a £3.5 million move to Newcastle in 2010. He was also part of the Ivory Coast team that won the African Cup of Nations in 2015.

The defensive midfielder wasn’t known for his goalscoring exploits, but is fondly remember by Premier League fans for scoring this incredible volley in a 4-4 draw between Newcastle and Arsenal.

Tiote had only made 11 appearances for his new Chinese club before his unfortunate passing. There currently aren’t any other details about a potential cause of death.

His former club sent out their condolences via Twitter.
