Dana White on McGregor vs. Mayweather: “I Think It’s Going to Happen”

The tables are turning quite quickly.

It was only a couple months ago that UFC president Dana White insisted that a fight between lightweight champion Conor McGregor and retired boxing kingpin Floyd Mayweather would never, ever happen. White is backpeddling hard on those statements, and even admitted that he thinks the fight will actually happen during an appearance on Conan this week.

“I do think it’s going to happen,” White said, according to Brett Okamoto of ESPN. “I think it’s going to be a tough deal, because, obviously, there are a lot of egos involved in this deal and a lot of people, so that always make it tougher.

“(But) on the flip side, there’s so much money involved, I just don’t see how it doesn’t happen.”

White’s comments make us wonder if the UFC has somehow managed to get a cut of the action, possibly in a co-promotion effort with Mayweather Promotions. McGregor has previously hinted that the Ali Act, a piece of legislation that prevents fight promoters from having strict control over an athlete’s ability to make a living, might be the loophole he needs to fight Mayweather while under UFC contract.

Interestingly enough, White even admitted as much in a recent interview with TMZ.

“It doesn’t make a lot of sense for my business, but I would never keep Conor from making that kind of money,” White said. “He obviously has a lot of opportunities right now. Tony Ferguson is out there, the Floyd Mayweather thing is out there, we’ll see how this thing plays out.”

A mega pay-per-view fight with Floyd Mayweather would easily be the biggest pay day of McGregor’s career, win or lose.

In related news, the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas has reportedly reserved June 10 as the date for the potential superfight.
