Cristiano Ronaldo Suspended Five Games For Shoving Referee During El Clasico

Cristiano Ronaldo will miss the first five games of the La Liga season after earning himself a red card and then pushing the referee during Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup game against bitter rivals Barcelona.

Ronaldo came on as a second-half substitute during the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup, a two-match contest between the current winners of La Liga and the Copa del Ray (Spain’s domestic cup competition). He scored an excellent goal in the 80th minute, got booked for taking off his shirt during the celebration, and was then booked again for diving just a couple minutes later.

The La Liga season kicks off on Friday night, as Real Madrid’s first game is on Sunday against Deportivo. Ronaldo will almost certainly appeal the suspension in an attempt to get it reduced, but if the league refuses to back down, he won’t be eligible to play in Spain until September 20.

The first El Clasico of the La Liga season isn’t until December 20, when Barcelona will travel to Madrid.
