The Royal Rumble is officially in the books, and the WWE Universe is squarely positioned on the Road to WrestleMania. Pro wrestling’s biggest event of the year goes down in April, and regularly features a few huge celebrity appearances. The rumors that UFC lightweight champion (and former featherweight champ, before he was unceremoniously stripped of that belt) Conor McGregor might make an appearance continue to swirl, thanks in part to the Irishman’s vague answers about the topic.
During an exclusive interview with notable MMA reporter Ariel Helwani last week, McGregor actually confirmed that he was engaging in talks with the WWE about appearing at WrestleMania 33 in Orlando, Florida.
“Never say never!” McGregor said when Helwani asked him point-blank whether he would be at WrestleMania. “I know there’s been conversation, I know Triple H was at the show. I’d love to go into the WWE and have a real knock. Let one of them have a real knock and see what’s what. But we’ll see. The conversation’s ongoing. I’ve turned down some things. [With this], the conversation is ongoing.”
He went to explain how he decides what non-UFC appearances to make, basically saying it boils down to how much money he can earn versus how much of a time commitment he has to make. He claims to have turned down plenty of non-fighting job offers because they would take weeks or months to complete.
“Look I don’t need nothing right now, I’m chilling,” he added. “I’m trying to make something [the Mayweather fight] that I want to make happen … happen. I’m trying to make something that I feel will be historic. Like long after I’m gone it’ll be told to kids, like some historical s**t.”
When questioned further about the potential superfight with Floyd Mayweather, McGregor insisted that he wasn’t joking around — he is seriously trying to put it together.
“Me and Floyd have got to get together and figure it out, the same way Floyd and Manny [Pacquiao] figured it out,” McGregor told Helwani. “Once we come to a set number that I’m happy with, that he’s happy with. Then we go to the customers, we go to the promoters, the buyers. And then we get it done. That’s next. I’ll go to Vegas and I’ll handle the commission, we’ll figure that situation out. And we’ll come to a dotted line and then we’ll go. But this is happening.”
“That fight was more than just being explored,” McGregor said. “That fight has been in the works for a while now. There’s a lot of steps to get the fight done. But it’s the fight to make. It’s the fight that people want. It’s the fight that I want. It’s the fight that I’m confident going in there. I’ve got the reach. I’ve got the youth. I’ve got the unpredictable style. You can’t prepare for a style like me. A guy said to me why conquer one world when you can conquer two? So I’m going to go conquer two worlds.”
It appears as though the potential payday for such a huge fight is keeping McGregor hot on Mayweather’s trail. The UFC’s golden boy believes that a bout with Mayweather is worth too much money to be ignored.
“If Manny and Floyd did half a billion, I believe this one, cross sports, never before seen, this is the first billion dollar fight. So peoples gotta pay for a billion dollar fight. So it’s getting there. We’ll see.”
