A Pair of NHL Teams Threw a Subtle Dig at the NBA’s New Social Media Policy

In case you hadn’t heard, the NBA officially made some changes to their social media policy last week. There’s a lot of official sounding language about not tweeting anything that would “disparage, belittle or embarrass an individual opponent or game official,” but basically, it boils down to this: no more friendly banter.

Apparently the NBA expects their elite athletes, who get paid millions of dollars to play a sport at the highest level, to all be friends, regardless of rivals. Additionally, they expect every team’s respective social media managers to play nice with each other — which is boring.

The NHL, on the other hand, has no such rules to protect the feelings of special snowflake athletes, owners, or fans. On Sunday afternoon, the Dallas Stars and the Nashville Predators took a thinly veiled at the NBA’s new policy with this series of tweets before their game.

The Predators social media person played along perfectly.

That’s right. Pro sports is about winning, which means the other guys have to lose. In a digital world, online trash talk is just part of the game now. Thankfully the NHL still understands that.
