Luke Skywalker was the main hero of the original Star Wars saga, with Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda training him in the ways of the Force so he could eventually become a Jedi Knight and defeat Darth Vader. That being said, Luke’s twin sister Leia easily could have filled her brother’s shoes had she been the one raised on Tatooine instead of him. That isn’t a knock against Leia by any means, as the princess proved to be just as instrumental in the Empire’s downfall as her brother, but it’s hard not to wonder how things may have played out had Yoda trained the other Skywalker child instead (and according to the recent book Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View, Yoda would have preferred to train Leia anyway).
While we can’t see such an alternate plot play out on film, artist Jennifer Aberin Johnson (via Nerdist) has imagined what Episodes IV-VI might have looked like had Leia and Luke swapped roles entirely. For instance, Leia would have been the one rescuing Luke from the Death Star (which is kind of what happens anyway considering Leia has to save everyone’s skin in the prison block).
In this alternate timeline, Leia would have been the Jedi-in-training, while Luke have been a prince of Alderaan. Here are the pair together, with Leia’s outfit looking very reminiscent of Rey’s in The Last Jedi:
