X-Men: Bryan Singer Explains Why Mystique Should Have Her Own Movie

Although it looks like X-Men: Apocalypse could be Bryan Singer’s last time out as director in the X-Men series (at least for now), he’s still got his sights set on where the franchise might be headed in the future.

Appearing on the The Empire Film Podcast this week, Singer revealed that he would be interested in seeing a spin-off film focused on Mystique, the shape-shifting mutant played by Jennifer Lawrence in the last three X-Men films.

“I think [Mystique’s] right for [a standalone movie], whether it’s Jennifer [Lawrence] or not,” he said, making note of how her worldview differs considerably from most of the other X-Men. “Xavier can get into Cerebro and look at the world but he’d rather just teach classes and see the beauty of mutants and humans co-existing in his mansion in Westchester. Along comes Raven with a reality check on the state of the world. It opens up a lot of avenues.”

Jennifer Lawrence, along with co-stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult, has reached the end of her three-picture deal with the X-Men franchise and recently told EW that she’s unsure if she’ll return.

“Fassbender and McAvoy and I were all talking,” she said, “Like, ‘Will you come back?’ ‘I dunno.’ ‘I’ll come back, if you come back.’ Fox should be terrified because the deal we made was like if one of us doesn’t come back, none of us are.”

She then added, “I would love to come back. I love the fans and I love the character. But then you realize how important your year is, like how important three months out of your year is. I don’t know. I shouldn’t be that honest.”

So far, Wolverine is the only X-Men character to get any solo spin-off movies, so it will be interesting to see whether Fox pursues any other avenues. Considering how rare female-driven superhero films are, even in 2016, it seems doubtful that Mystique would be at the top of that list. Then again, if Lawrence does return with another multi-picture deal, she has the star-power to carry her own movie, so anything is possible.
