Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was another smash success for Disney’s Star Wars arm, but it was lacking in one particular area that had nothing to do with the film itself: there was no Star Wars: Episode VIII teaser trailer attached to it.
With the release of the next Star Wars saga film still 11 months away (not to mention that it doesn’t even have an official title yet), it’s admittedly still pretty early to be complaining about there not being a trailer, but if you’ll recall, at this point two years ago we already had a teaser for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That trailer was released on Nov. 28, 2014, nearly 13 months before the film’s theatrical release, so it’s not unreasonable to question why Disney hasn’t put out a trailer for Episode VIII yet.
So when can we expect to see the first trailer? Well, according to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, we won’t be seeing anything from Episode VIII until sometime in the Spring, so at best we’re still at least two months away from getting our first look at the next Star Wars film.

While having to wait until the Spring for a trailer is disappointing, it’s also important to remember that Disney didn’t release the first Rogue One trailer until April of last year, so it’s not like they’re doing something unprecedented by not releasing an Episode VIII trailer yet.
That being said, if April passes without a first look at the film, we should probably begin to worry. Until then, we’ll just sit here impatiently waiting and speculating over what Luke Skywalker’s first words to Rey will be when Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters on Dec. 15, 2017.
