One of the problems with Disney rebooting the Star Wars universe, making prequel spinoffs and new official episode sequels, was always going to be continuity. The new stories can’t contradict the old ones, so the writers have to be extra careful to make sure timelines and story arcs all line up properly. That’s actually the main reason that the heroes in 2016’s Rogue One were killed off at the end — they obviously don’t appear in 1977’s Episode IV – A New Hope, so they had to go.
Speaking of A New Hope, the ending of Rogue One shows us what happened just minutes (or maybe hours?) before the entire Star Wars legacy was first kicked off with the opening scene of the original movie. For those curious, one clever fan has edited the two scenes together to show the seamless sequence of events — from the desperate escape with the Death Star plans at the end of Rogue One to Darth Vadar catching up with Princess Leia and the rebel ship in the opening scene of A New Hope, as Leia hides the plans and a message to Obi-Wan Kenobi in R2-D2 and sends them out in the escape pod.
Check it out. A good watch for any Star Wars fan.
