Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Vin Diesel Thinks A Groot Solo Film Is “Inevitable”

Vin Diesel is set to have a very busy year. In addition to starring in xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, which is in theaters right now, and The Fate of the Furious this April, the actor is also set to reprise his role as the sentient tree hero Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (okay, technically he’s playing Baby Groot this time out).

Groot has quickly become a fan-favorite among Marvel movie fans and his return has already made a big impression thanks to Vol. 2’s exciting debut trailer, but the character is very much a package deal right now, as it’s tough to imagine him appearing without his intergalactic hero buddies. That being said, Diesel thinks it’s only a matter of time before Groot goes solo.

“It’s something that James Gunn has talked about, and something that I know he’d love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it’s inevitable, I think, ya know, that character’s so enigmatic. He was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel Universe, and I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done to realize that character has exceeded anyone and everyone’s expectations.”

Although some may scoff at the idea of a character who literally only knows three words (four if you count “we”) carrying an entire movie, Diesel thinks it’s something fans would love because Groot is a surprisingly nuanced character. “He’s such an interesting character, and there’s so much to learn about him, and you know he, I’d love to go back to his planet and learn more about him and I think the world would. He’s really a genius on a lot of levels, just we can only hear him say “I Am Groot” because of our sophistication level, not his.”

Don’t worry, Vin. We’re gonna get started on the script right away. One question, though: how many “I am Groot,” lines should we give you? 5,000? Consider it done.
