Transformers: The Last Knight may have been hot garbage, but there’s good reason to hope that ’80s-set spin-off Bumblebee will at least be watchable, if not decent. For one thing, Michael Bay won’t be directing it. That job is being filled by Travis Knight, who directed the fantastic Kubo and the Two Strings. That’s a pretty good sign already.
Now, there’s even more reason to be optimistic about the film’s chances, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, John Cena will be starring alongside Hailee Steinfeld in the Bumblebee movie. Sure, Cena may just be a wrestler to some, but he’s a scene-stealer to be sure (he’s easily the best thing about the 2015 comedy Trainwreck and that was an all-around good movie). He seems like the kind of guy who’d enjoy riffing off a bunch of CGI robots and he definitely has the action chops for such a part.
I’m not saying the Bumblebee movie will be any good … but it could be!
