‘Top Gun’ Sequel Release Date And Director Revealed

Top Gun: Maverick, the long-awaited (well, depending on who you ask) sequel  to the 1986 military action drama starring Tom Cruise, will be helmed by Tron: Legacy director Joseph Krosinski. The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer made the announcement on Twitter this morning, while also confirming that the sequel will be releasing on July 12, 2019.

Krosinski’s hiring comes as no surprise, as the director was previously reported to be Paramount and Skydance Pictures’ number one choice for the job. The filmmaker previously worked with Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise on the 2013 sci-fi film Oblivion and Cruise reportedly enjoyed working with Krosinski so much that he’s been wanting to make another film with him ever since.

Cruise, who will reprise his role as hotshot pilot Maverick in the sequel, describes Top Gun: Maverick as “a competition film like the first one, and it’s going to be in the same vein and the same tone as the first,” while also being “a progression for Maverick.”

Cruise may not be the only Top Gun veteran returning to active service, as Val Kilmer has expressed interest in reprising his role as Iceman, but there has not been official word on his return as of yet.
