Although Spider-Man: Homecoming doesn’t hit theaters until July, the Marvel superhero has dominated the comic book movie news cycle in recent weeks. First, Sony Pictures announced that they had secured a release date for their long-gestating Venom movie and followed that up with news of a Black Cat / Silver Sable spinoff. This is no doubt exciting news if you’re a Spider-Man fan, but how does the wall-crawler himself fit into all this?
With the Venom and Black Cat movies reportedly not directly tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s unclear what this means for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, who is definitely tied into the MCU. It turns out that Holland isn’t really sure either, but if he thinks it’s a good idea, he would be open to appearing in the spinoffs.
Here’s what the actor had to say to Variety when asked about his potential involvement in the Venom and Black Cat features:
“I have no idea. I haven’t read a script. I haven’t seen any sort of concept art, so that would be something I would decide on when I see material.”
It would certainly be weird if Spider-Man were to not show up in either film but at the same time, it could lead to some confusing continuity problems if Holland were to appear in other comic book movies that aren’t explicitly connected to the MCU. To be honest, this whole situation is sort of unprecedented in the franchise movie space, so it will be interesting to see how Sony and Marvel handle these sorts of questions going forward.
Oh and remember, there’s a new Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer coming out tomorrow, so stay tuned for that!
