Logan was practically marketed as Hugh Jackman’s final outing as Wolverine but back in February, just prior to the film’s release, Jackman mentioned that if an X-Men/Avenges crossover had been possible at the time, he probably would have stayed on to play the character at least one more time.
Now, with the threat of a Disney buyout of 20th Century Fox looming, there’s a very real possibility of Wolverine appearing alongside the Avengers in a new film within a few years’ time. Jackman is currently busy promoting his new film, The Greatest Showman, and Collider couldn’t resist the opportunity to ask how the actor would feel about having another go at Wolverine now that he may very well get the chance to team up with the Avengers.
Well, it would appear that Jackman takes mutant retirement quite seriously. Here’s what he had to say on the matter:
“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, ‘Hang on!’
But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”
As great as it would be to see Jackman duke it out with the likes of Iron Man and the Hulk, Logan was the perfect swan song for his version of the character, so it’s understandable why he’d be hesitant to wade back into things after previously calling it quits. Plus, with the X-Men franchise potentially linking up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (assuming the Disney/Fox deal goes through, of course), it feels like the right time for a new actor to step into the role.
