The overwhelmingly positive response to Deadpool made it clear that there is a sizable market for R-rated superhero movies. Although DC’s upcoming Suicide Squad may look like an R-rated film, it’s actually PG-13, something that director David Ayer is apparently fine with.
“We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating,” Ayer recently told MTV. “But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice… There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.”
However, Ayer is also open to the idea of the already-confirmed Suicide Squad 2 getting an R-rating, but it would have to be designed that way from the start.
“For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate,” Ayer said. “[It] would be worth lobbying for.”
With Deadpool earning more than $750 million at the worldwide box office, we’d say Suicide Squad 2’s chances are pretty good.
