Star Wars: The Mystery Of C-3PO’s Red Arm Finally Revealed

Poor C-3PO. The worrisome droid got so little screen time in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that he didn’t even get the chance to tell the story of how he got his red arm (we didn’t even recognize him at first!). C-3PO’s red arm has become one of the more humorous mysteries introduced by The Force Awakens, but thanks to a new standalone comic focused on the beloved protocol droid, we now know how it happens. And it’s surprisingly dark.

Written and drawn by James Robinson and Tony Harris, the C-3PO comic follows Threepio and a handful of droids as they struggle to survive on a planet full of droid-hating wildlife after a rescue mission gone awry. Along the way, Threepio forges a bond with an Imperial protocol droid he’s helping to deliver to the Rebellion. Oh and the Imperial droid has red arms, so you know where this is going.

The Imperial droid ends up sacrificing himself to save Threepio and help him finish his mission. It turns out that the droid is sick of having no free will and wants his one choice he’s allowed to make to actually mean something. Threepio ends up taking the red arm as a symbol of the droid’s sacrifice and a tribute to a fallen friend.

Wow, and here we thought he was just trying to make a fashion statement. C-3PO has seen some heavy stuff, man.
