‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Scores Second Biggest Opening Of All Time

There was never any doubt that Star Wars: The Last Jedi would dominate its opening weekend but the film actually eclipsed its projected $200 million domestic debut, earning an estimated $220 million.

This means that The Last Jedi not only had the biggest opening of 2017 — a title formerly held by Beauty and the Beast’s $174.8 million debut — but the second biggest opening weekend ever. The only film it trails? Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which brought in $248 million domestic in 2015.

While The Last Jedi was unable to surpass its predecessor, it did open well ahead of 2016’s Rogue One, which earned $155.1 million in its opening weekend last December. The Last Jedi now stands as one of only four movies to have eclipsed $200 million in its domestic debut (unsurprisingly, three of those titles are from Disney).

To put these figures in perspective, Star Wars: The Last Jedi earned more money in its opening weekend than Justice League has earned in total, with the latter film estimated to have made $219.5 million since its debut on November 17.

In addition to its impressive domestic take, the film earned another $230 million internationally, making for a worldwide debut of $450 million. Industry projections had predicted the film to make between $424 million and $440 million in its worldwide debut.

The other major release this weekend, the animated family feature Ferdinand, placed second with an estimated $13.3 million.
