Although it certainly wasn’t something that most fans wanted to see, it actually wasn’t all that surprising to find out that Han Solo and
Princess General Leia Organa had been separated for quite some time by the time Star Wars: The Force Awakens begins. Although they were perfect for each other, their equally fiery temperaments must have led to some heated fights over the years. Plus, they had Kylo Ren for a son and there’s no way any couple is staying together for that kid.
While an exact reason for Han and Leia’s split isn’t provided in The Force Awakens, Carrie Fisher has her own theory for why her character ultimately called it quits with that scruffy-looking Nerf herder. “He smuggled way too much,” Fisher answered, when asked at the Saskatoon Comic & Entertainment Expo why Leia and Han split up. “Girls, I know you don’t want your husband smuggling, do you? Hanging out with the hairy guy too often. I think there are a lot of problems with that. He wouldn’t take me on that hyperspace thing enough. [That’s a] euphemism.”
So there you have it: too much smuggling and not enough of Han sharing his “hyperspace thing” led Leia to send the Millennium Falcon pilot packing. In other news, it’s been reported that Leia will have a larger role in Star Wars Episode VIII, which means we can look forward to many more interviews where Carrie Fisher uses Star Wars euphemisms. See, the world isn’t all bad.
