Ever since Sony Pictures announced the Venom movie, there has been speculation over whether the film would tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and/or if Tom Holland would make a guest appearance as Spider-Man.
The situation is tricky given the deal struck between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures but in the case of Venom, Marvel Studios ultimately opted out of having Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appear in it. In fact, he’s not even mentioned by name, which would suggest that Venom is set in a world without Spider-Man. But then, that can’t really be the case considering the Spider-Man tease in Venom’s credit sequence.
Okay, it’s not so much a tease as it is an extended trailer, as roughly five minutes of footage from the upcoming animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse plays as a preview before the end of the credits. That’s a pretty big cop out but there is still the possibility that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Tom Hardy’s Venom could meet up in the future.
According to Venom director Ruben Fleischer, the door for a future crossover is “absolutely” open, but there was never a plan to have Spidey appear in his movie. “I think we’re hoping to build to that, but, no, at no point was Tom Holland going to be in this movie,” Fleischer explained to IGN. “It was exciting to me seeing all the fan speculation and I know that Tom Holland is a fan of Venom and is really excited to have those two pit off against each other so I think there’s reason to look forward to.”
Venom hits theaters this Friday, while Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens on December 14. You can watch the new trailer for the latter film below.
