Seriously, did anyone see this coming?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony is officially developing a Spider-Man spin-off focused on Morbius The Living Vampire. Daniel Espinosa (Life) is taking directing duties on this one, with none other than
Hot Topic Joker Jared Leto set to star.
Here’s THR’s background on the character, for those unfamiliar with Morbius:
“Morbius is Dr. Michael Morbius, a scientist who suffered from a rare blood disease and attempted to cure himself to disastrous results. Instead of being cured, he became afflicted with a condition that was a form of vampirism — the thirst for blood, along with fangs and super strength — and fought Spider-Man. Over time, however, he became a slightly heroic figure in his own right and even headlined his own comic book titles.”
In other words, it looks like Morbius will be similar to the upcoming Venom spin-off in that it will reframe a Spider-Man villain as more of an antihero. There’s also a spin-off focused on Silver Sable and Black Cat in the works, but it’s currently postponed.
There’s no timeline on when Morbius will start shooting, what year we might expect to see it in theaters, or if this will have any impact on Leto’s commitment to the DCEU and the Joker character. In the meantime, let’s just take stock of the fact that we may soon live in a world where the lead singer of Thirty Seconds to Mars has played villains for both Marvel and DC.
What a time to be alive.
