Getting to play Spider-Man would be a dream come true for any young actor trying to get their first break and right now, Tom Holland is on everyone’s radar thanks to his showstopping reveal as the character in the latest Captain America: Civil War trailer. Holland had to compete with hundreds of other actors to get the part, but luckily he had a few Marvel connections in his back pocket that he called to help him get his audition.
Holland worked with Chris Hemsworth on last year’s In The Heart of the Sea and according to the New York Daily News, Holland reached out to the Thor star, asking him to put in a good word for him at Marvel. Hemsworth told CinemaBlend that he had nothing but good things to say about Holland and his work ethic, so the God of Thunder was definitely in the actor’s corner for that favor.
In addition to Hemsworth, Holland also got some help from Jon Berenthal, who will play The Punisher later this month in the second season of Daredevil. The two previously worked together on the period drama Pilgrimage and since Berenthal was also trying to land his Marvel role around the same time, the two helped each other make their audition tapes even better.
Having a few connections at Marvel wasn’t the only reason Holland got the part of course, as the actor’s tireless hustling for the role and background as a gymnast went a long way in getting Marvel to pick him as the next Spider-Man. We’ll see if all that hard work paid off when Holland makes his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Civil War on May 6.
