Update: Representatives from both Fox and Marvel have reached out to Den of Geek denying reports that the Fantastic Four film rights have reverted back to Marvel.
Original Story: Well, here’s some potentially fantastic news.
Following yesterday’s announcement that Marvel Studios and Fox have reached a deal allowing the latter to develop two TV shows based on Marvel properties, Legion and Hellfire, Den of Geek is reporting that Fox has relinquished the Fantastic Four film rights to Marvel in exchange.
This comes hot on the heels of this summer’s trainwreck of a Fantastic Four film, which was a critical and commercial disaster for Fox. Similar to what happened with Sony and the Spider-Man film rights earlier this year, Marvel is seemingly relishing the opportunity to scoop its properties back up, to the point where they are allegedly already planning to release a new Fantastic Four movie as part of the recently announced trio of mystery titles scheduled for a 2020 release.
If this rumor turns out to be true, it would mean that the X-Men film rights would be the only Marvel property not back under the studio’s umbrella. Considering the success Fox has had with that franchise though, don’t expect to see Wolverine trading barbs with Spider-Man on-screen anytime soon.
