It had already been confirmed that Sony was planning to make a solo film about iconic Spider-Man villain Venom, who is most often portrayed as Eddie Brock underneath the alien symbiote. The movie, which isn’t scheduled to be released until October 2018, now has a star.
IGN is reporting that Tom Hardy will play Brock/Venom in the upcoming film, which will be a part of Sony’s Marvel Universe (but not a part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe). The same report also tags Ruben Fleischer as the director, who most famously directed Zombieland in 2009. The Venom movie will be the first film in Sony’s shared Marvel Universe, with rumors of a Black Cat/Silver Sable film being a follow-up. Spider-Man, as a character, is obviously a question mark these days, as Sony recently allowed the wall-crawler back into the Marvel/Disney fold to be a part of Captain America: Civil War and the upcoming Infinity War films.
Hardy is no stranger to superhero movies. He played villain Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, the final movie in Christopher Nolan’s excellent Batman trilogy.
Venom was previously played by Topher Grace in Spider-Man 3, and the less said about that movie, the better. Here’s hoping that Hardy finally gives us the Venom we deserve!
