REPORT: ‘Jurassic World 2’ Will Be One Of The Most Expensive Movies Ever

Although the first Jurassic World managed to become the fourth highest-grossing film of all time, raking in $1.67 billion worldwide, its $150 million production budget was actually relatively modest, at least as far as modern blockbusters go. With the kind of return on investment Universal Pictures saw on Jurassic World, it’s hardly surprising to hear that the upcoming sequel will have a higher budget, but if newly revealed details are accurate, it will be one of the most expensive movies ever made.

Director Juan Antonio Bayona recently sat down for an interview with Spanish language magazine ‘El Pais Seminal,’ where he discussed some new details about the upcoming film. Bayona revealed that the Jurassic World sequel has an official title that will be announced at a later date and also that the film will have a $260 million budget. For reference, this would tie Jurassic World 2 with Disney’s Tangled as the fifth most expensive movie ever made.

While Bayona did not disclose why the film is getting such a massive budgetary increase over its predecessor, increased use of CGI and practical effects, as well as retaining current talent and attracting more big name Hollywood actors are two of the more likely reasons for the hike (Chris Pratt’s salary can’t be coming cheap these days).

Jurassic World 2 is set for release on June 22, 2018 and will see Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprise their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively. Oh and Spoiler Alert: the dinosaurs are coming back too.
