By now, you’ve probably heard the news that Henry Cavill has exited the DC movie universe and will no longer be playing Superman going forward. Cavill himself has been in the news quite a bit recently, largely due to his casting in the upcoming Netflix series based on The Witcher fantasy novels. Many — ourselves included — wondered how Cavill would be able to balance his DC workload with his new Netflix commitments and as it turns out, strained negotiation talks with Warner Bros. are largely to blame for the actor’s decision to pursue a new project.
The Hollywood Reporter’s story on Cavill’s Superman exit notes that contract talks between Warner Bros. and Cavill broke down primarily because the studio didn’t have much planned for him in the new future. Focus shifted from developing a sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel to a Supergirl origin movie, which Cavill would likely only have a limited role in at best. Though Cavill was initially going to have a part in Shazam!, that fell through due to scheduling conflicts. While other factors were surely at play, it appears that these frustrations pushed Cavill to walk away altogether and pursue The Witcher, a series that he is a personal fan of.CD Projekt Red
