REPORT: Disney Looking To Buy Fox, Add X-Men To Marvel Cinematic Universe

Disney was able to cut a landmark deal with Sony in recent years to get Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but all the characters still under Fox’s control — namely, the X-Men and Fantastic Four — continue to remain out of the company’s reach. As reported by CNBC [via io9], Disney has come up with a brilliantly simple solution: just buy Fox outright.

According to CNBC, Disney is looking to purchase 21st Century Fox, the entertainment arm of the larger Fox company, which is apparently looking to offload the division in order to focus on more on news and sports. If such a deal were to go through, it would effectively mean that Marvel would finally have access to the film rights for all of its comic book characters and would allow Marvel Studios to finally incorporate the X-Men and Fantastic Four into its shared cinematic universe.

Unfortunately, Bloomberg has since issued an update to that initial report, stating that sources are indicating that while the talks did take place over the past few weeks, discussions have stalled and neither camp has commented on the potential deal. In other words, it looks like the MCU will continue on without the X-Men and Fantastic Four, but the fact that Disney has gone so far as to try and acquire Fox shows just how badly the company wants these characters to be part of the franchise.

We’ll have more on this story as it develops …
