New Actor Playing Chewbacca Has Heartfelt Message For ‘Star Wars’ Fans And Peter Mayhew

Yesterday, Disney posted the first cast photo for Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s upcoming Han Solo spinoff movie. The photo featured main stars like Alden Ehrenreich (Han Solo), Donald Glover (Lando Calrissian) and Emilia Clarke (whose role remains a mystery), but it also featured a younger-looking Chewbacca.

While original Chewie actor Peter Mayhew donned the suit one last time for The Force Awakens, he has officially passed the baton to his body double on that film, Joonas Suotamo, who is the man in the suit in the aforementioned cast photo. It turns out that Suotamo was being groomed for the role for some time and he made this announcement last night in a heartfelt letter that he shared with his Twitter followers:

This is sure to be a bittersweet moment for Star Wars fans, as Mayhew has played Chewie from the very beginning and the role has come to define his career. We’re sure that Suotamo will do the role justice, but fans will also be pleased to hear that Mayhew isn’t quite done yet. Apparently, he’s donning the suit one last time for Star Wars: The Last Jedi this December. Whether or not Chewie makes it out of that film alive (he damn well better), watching it is sure to be an emotional experience with the knowledge that it will likely be the last time we see Mayhew playing the lovable Wookie, not to mention the last time we see the late Carrie Fisher play Leia.

Wow, get the tissues ready folks. December 15th is going to bring the waterworks.
