Shortly after the Candyman sequel was announced, Peele shared why the original film was so important to him growing up.
“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre. Alongside Night of the Living Dead, Candyman was a major inspiration for me as a filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”
The original 1992 film is widely regarded as one of the most iconic slashers in movie history. Directed by Bernard Rose and based on Clive Barker’s short story “The Forbidden,” Candyman was both a commerical and critical success. The supernatural horror movie grossing more than $25 million domestically and was quickly followed by two sequels, Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999).
