Marvel Boss Comments On Josh Brolin Playing Thanos And Cable

Comic book movie fans received quite a surprise last week when it was announced that Josh Brolin would be playing Cable in the next Deadpool movie. While Brolin is an excellent actor and a great choice for the role, it was surprising to hear his name reported because it had never come up in any Cable casting rumors over the last six months or so … and because he’s already set to play Thanos, another prominent Marvel character.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter and was asked for his take on Brolin being cast as Thanos and Cable. Given that Deadpool 2 is being made by Fox and not Marvel, Feige sees no issue with Brolin playing two different comic book characters for two different studios, as Marvel and Disney “don’t have anything written into our contracts about other roles that people can do.”

“Indiana Jones and Han Solo are the same person … it hasn’t been a problem,” Feige said. “And I think Thanos and Cable are two very different characters.”

Feige also revealed that, despite the success Fox has been having with films like Deadpool and Logan, Marvel has no plans to make an R-rated comic book movie. The way he sees it, the success of both of those films had little to do with their R ratings.

“My takeaway from both of those films is not the R rating, it’s the risk they took, the chances they took, the creative boundaries that they pushed,” Feige said. “That should be the takeaway for everyone.”
