While Sony and Marvel Studios have managed to play nice in recent years thanks to their Spider-Man deal, it’s been a different story when it comes to Fox. The studio currently holds the film rights to some of the biggest Marvel Comics properties, such as X-Men and Fantastic Four, and it’s been a difficult process for both studios to try and reach agreements on how to best share these properties.
While we’re still a long way off from an X-Men/Avengers crossover, it looks like there is hope that the two studios could find common ground in the future, as it turns out that Fox and Marvel were able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement for two of their respective films: Deadpool and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2.
During a special Deadpool Q&A screening in LA over the weekend, The Playlist reports that Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese revealed to the audience that, in order to get the character Negasonic Teenage Warhead into the movie, Fox had to play nice with Marvel and allow them to borrow a character of their own.http://comicbook.com/2016/11/14/deadpool-guardians-galaxy-2-connection-ego-planet-negasonic-warh/ Source: ComicBook.com
Essentially, the inclusion of Negasonic Teenage Warhead had to be cleared with Marvel because Reese and Wernick wanted to change pretty much everything about the character. Marvel agreed to these terms, but only if Fox allowed them to use a specific character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. “Kurt Russell [‘s Ego the Living Planet] in the new ‘Guardians’ movie was the character that Fox swapped with Marvel to [change] Negasonic Teenage Warhead powers,” said Wernick.
Although Ego originally appeared in the Thor comics, he was apparently included in the collection of characters given to Fox with the Fantastic Four/Silver Surfer properties. It will be interesting to see if the two studios can make more deals like this in the future, as this Deadpool/Guardians bridge-building could very well lead to much bigger crossovers down the road. After all, it would be a crime if Wolverine and Spider-Man never get to meet.
