The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) took place this past weekend and Karl Urban was in attendance to promote the upcoming second season of Amazon Prime’s The Boys. As you might expect in a room full of nerds, it didn’t take long for the conversation to shift from the popular superhero series to the potential of a Dredd sequel.
During The Boys panel over the weekend, Urban was asked by a fan about the possibility of a Dredd sequel, and the actor’s response showed he truly enjoyed playing the titular character.
“Listen, I would love to make it, I’m on the record saying that a bunch of times. I don’t know if that’s gonna happen. I think that the guys that own the rights to Dredd, Rebellion, I think they’re developing something called ‘Mega-City One’ and it would just be great to see more Dredd, whether it’s with me or not, it doesn’t matter. I’m a fan of Dredd and there’s so many great stories there. I’d love to see them. And I have no doubt that, someday, someone will make it. It’s just a matter of time.”
We’d love to see Urban play Dredd again, but the chances of convincing writer Alex Garland to return to pen the script for the sequel isn’t going to happen… anytime soon at least. During an interview with ScreenGeek in 2019, Garland said that although he loves Dredd, the whole experience was “pretty crude,” and he has no desire to return to the franchise.
“No. It was a pretty crude experience, for a bunch of reasons. At the end of it, I didn’t want to go back. I love Dredd, by which I mean I love the character, but I’m not in any hurry to do that again.”
We don’t particularly care for Rotten Tomatoes, but it is worth pointing out that as of publication, Dredd currently sits at 79% on the Tomatometer and has an audience score of 72%. Despite the positive reviews, the beloved comic book movie only managed to pull in $41 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million, making the likelihood of a sequel not so good.
