The marketing campaign for the Justice League movie has spent considerable time building up the five central superheroes — Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg — but the trailers have only offered glimpses of the film’s big bad, Steppenwolf. Fortunately, the new trailer released for Chinese audience seeks to give Steppenwolf his due.
Most of the footage is stuff we’ve already seen in previous trailers, but the new footage that is there belongs almost exclusively to Steppenwolf. The standout scene sees Darkseid’s herald talking to a terrified man, begging Steppenwolf to let him live, prompting a rather humorous response from the leader of Apokolips’ army.
Actually, the whole trailer is notable for its lighter tone throughout, as we also hear Batman and Aquaman make some funny quips. Joss Whedon, who stepped in to take over directorial duties for Zack Snyder earlier this year, was reportedly tasked with making the movie a bit lighter and more comedic, and that is certainly evident here.
Steppenwolf still remains largely a mystery and it’s doubtful that he’ll be the only villain the Justice League squares off against in the film, but it’s good to see him finally getting some attention from these trailers for a change.
Still no sign of Superman though …
Justice League will be released in theaters on Nov. 17.
