Joss Whedon notably walked away from the Marvel Cinematic Universe last year after having directed the first two Avengers films, citing fatigue and a desire to direct smaller projects as the key reasons for his departure. Still, it sounds like Whedon could be persuaded to return to the MCU someday … as long as he gets to direct a very specific style of film.
Speaking with The Wrap recently, Whedon admitted that he would be willing to another movie for Marvel is the studio let him helm a gritty, female-fronted story:
“Yeah, of course [I’d be into that]. Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants.”
Whedon made his name making cult-favorite, female-driven TV fare such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly, so it’s hardly surprising that he would want to stick to a similar template on the big screen. Hey, if Marvel’s looking for a director for a Black Widow movie, it looks like they’ve already got a potential candidate!
