Remember when Johnny Depp was pure gold at the box office? Apparently studio executives still do, but the rest of the general public has basically forgot.
A series of poor performing films has culminated in Johnny Depp being named the Most Overpaid Star of 2015 by Forbes Magazine. And before you get worked about things, it’s not an arbitrary decision made by someone who got sick of seeing Captain Jack Sparrow stumble around drunk every year or two. Nope, it’s a very mathematical formula that basically measures how much a movie makes for every dollar it cost to make.
For example, when Johnny Depp starred in Mordecai, the film only made $47 million at the box office but it cost $60 million to make. All in all, Forbes calculates that Depp only earned $1.20 for every $1.00 he was paid, making him not a very good investment.
There’s a big leap between the Most Overpaid Star and the Second Most Overpaid Star, as Denzel Washington comes in at second place with a $6.50 return on every $1.00 paid, followed by Will Ferrell and Liam Neeson in third and fourth.
Surprisingly absent from this list is last year’s winner, Adam Sandler. When he signed that four-movie exclusive deal with Netflix, he became ineligible to be named the Most Overpaid Star in Hollywood. Which is a shame, because his movies are downright terrible.
